REGISTRATION IS OPEN

Dear friends of ICASSI,

Following many messages regarding the birthdays of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs yesterday, I am happy to inform you that the registration for our next summer school in Germany has been opened!
You will find it by clicking here: https://icassi.cventevents.com/
As there are many options regarding courses and accommodation, I advise you to first take a close look at our website: icassi.net/icassi-2024 The program booklet will give you a good overview of all available plenaries and courses. Please consider the website for the full course descriptions. All information on the location, the program and scholarship applications is available there.
Please note that if you want to apply for one of our many scholarships you will need to send all documents by February 15th to Joe Cice at josephicassi@gmail.com (https://www.icassi.net/scholarship-application/) Also, you might be able to profit from the group discount if you are registering a group of at least 6 adults or students together (downpayment has to be made by one designated group leader), Please consider the website for further information about all policies and procedures.
This year we will have a variety of accommodation choices to accommodate all our participants’ needs. If your first choice is not available you might need to choose a different accommodation. All accommodation and course spaces are following the first come first serve rule. The website will be updated regularly so please check from time to time on further updates about e..g. travel information. The easiest is to fly to Cologne (or Frankfurt) and then to take a train to Kall. We will organize taxis to be waiting at the train station of Kall on both Sundays during the registration hours.
And finally, if you experience any problems with the registration page or the registration process, please send an email to info.icassi@gmail.com
Given the current workload a reply might take a little while but a note about any error on the registration page will be appreciated.

Best wishes and I hope to see you all in Germany this summer!

Aligned Leadership - Building Relationships, Overcoming Resistance, and Achieving Success. An Adlerian Approach

Anyone can be a leader, at work, at home, and in the community. Leadership is not about an official title; it is a way of interacting with others to build and sustain mutually respectful relationships, overcome any resistance that may be experienced, and achieve success, however that is defined. Yet, everyone from time-to-time experiences resistance in relationships with others. If not understood and effectively addressed, the resistance can grow larger and substantially impact relationships overall as misalignment intensifies.
Jay’s presentation is based on his recently published book, Aligned Leadership. A main goal is to enhance awareness of this topic. A three-hour workshop from 11:00 am  2:00 pm central time (Chicago time) will focus on skill building to address resistance and be more in alignment.

Dear friends and colleagues,

We are all devastated to hear about the terrible attack on Israel. We hope that our Israeli friends and their families are as safe as possible in this uncertain time.

We join you in your sorrow for the lives which have been lost and the terrible trauma which you are facing. Our hearts go out to you all and please be assured that we will keep you in our thoughts (and prayers) and you can always reach out to us.

Take care of yourselves and stay as safe as possible. Hopefully the situation will become easier in the coming days.

With lots of sympathy,

On behalf of the ICASSI Board and Administrative Team

Dear Colleagues,

The IAIP Board stays in contact with our colleagues at the IAIP member organization Alfred Adler Institute in Tel Aviv.

They work with their students, patients, parents, colleagues, and neighbors, all while having unending personal losses and in the midst of the war.

Keeping them in our hearts, holding hope for lasting peace, and wishing them and everyone in their lives to stay safe,

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to you on behalf of the IAIP Board and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Individualpsychologie e. V. (DGIP) - a host of the 2024 Congress.

This is an important change, please read and share it with your members.

A couple of weeks ago, our DGIP colleagues found that a very large trade fair will take place in Cologne exactly on the dates in August when we have our Congress. That resulted in hotel prices in Cologne for that week doubling and tripling the typical price. Keeping the dates as scheduled would make participation in Congress by most of the colleagues virtually impossible.

After many discussions, the 2024 Congress has now been rescheduled at the same venue for July 4th - July 7th, 2024 (Pre-congress on July 3rd, 2024).

We will be changing relevant information on our website and other outlets in the coming days, and we will be sending you a new flyer and other media soon, too, so you can update that on your organizational websites.

Meanwhile, please share the information via your listserves or other ways of communication.

Those of you who submitted abstracts have received an email within the last 24 hours (of this email) asking you to please respond and let us know whether you still want your abstract to be considered. Please respond to that email if you have not done that already. You do not need to resubmit anything - just confirm.

The abstract/proposal submission deadline has now been extended through October 15th. The organizers received many original proposals/abstracts, and we want more.  The submission link remains the same - please share THIS LINK with your members or other interested colleagues.

You will soon hear from Dr. Giansecondo Mazzoli, the Secretary General of IAIP, with various organizational tasks related to the congress - please keep your eyes open on his email. In brief, please note that the deadline for Board nominations and a list of delegates will be February 29, 2024. Again, more on that later.

In conclusion, we hope that the new dates will work for as many of you and your colleagues as possible. We also appreciate DGIP colleagues' vigilance, which clearly prevented what could have become a disaster.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you all next summer,

Marina

THE IMPACT OF BULLYING

ICASSI NEWS

Dear ICASSI-friends,
I hope this email finds you well and you are able to enjoy this winter season.
As ICASSI’s new administrator it is my great pleasure to send you this message with some information about this past year and our upcoming events 2023.
I want to use this opportunity to thank my predecessor Becky LaFountain for all her marvelous work throughout the past eight years. With her accuracy and sharp mind she enabled a smooth functioning of the summer school in all these years. We will dearly miss Becky at ICASSI but we understand and are proud of her new endeavors and wish her lots of joy and good luck with them.
The year 2022 was marked by being able to return to in-person meetings after the long despairs of the two previous Covid years. We returned to our host site from 2013, Wageningen in the Netherlands, and the summer school was a great success with over 200 participants and faculty enjoying a wonderful program.
Also we continued the Virtual Adler Cafés monthly on the first weekend of the month (alternating Saturdays and Sundays). Throughout the year we had many renowned presenters and we will continue on Saturday, February 4th with Eva Dreikurs Ferguson. If you have not been able to join so far, maybe you are able to join on one of the weekends in 2023. We always start with a short presentation followed by one or two breakout sessions. The topics vary from current events, basic theoretical concepts to memories or first hand accounts.
After only 8 years we will return to Ireland for our summer school in 2023. The Dublin City University (DCU) will once more be our venue from July 30 to August 12. A change in the administration also brings a couple of new developments. In our aim to become more environmentally aware and use more digital means we will be using an event/conference app for the first time. You will be able to download an App to your smartphones and use it during the summer school to receive daily information, to find your way around the campus but also as one mean to communicate. Further information about the App will follow shortly before the summer school.
At the end of this year we will publish a short course booklet, which only provides all basic information about the summer school plenaries and courses. We hope that it will be more appealing if you want to use it in your professional environments to advertise for the summer school. All further information (detailed course descriptions, venue information, faculty, etc.) can then be found on the website as of December 30th  -  www.icassi.net
We plan to start with the registration on Cvent on January 6, 2023 (ICASSI.cventevents.com). This year I encourage you to register as soon as possible. Besides making it easier for the organization of the summer school, the two main reasons for registering early are:
You will most likely secure a place in your preferred course choices — classes can fill quickly
Next year you have to register before April 23 in order to have guaranteed accommodation on campus. After that date I have to book rooms individually for you and I cannot guarantee that they are not sold out and off-site accommodation in Dublin is relatively expensive. Therefore if you want to join the summer school and have the full experience living on campus I highly recommend to register early and not to jinx it. If you register before March 31st you will also benefit from the early registration deduction.
I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible next year in Dublin or online before that!

Wishing you a happy holiday season and all good wishes for a peaceful and good 2023!
Sabine Landscheidt

Sabine Landscheidt

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR: THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGY By Willard and Marguerite Beecher *

We dedicate this book to the late Dr. Alfred Adler, founder of Individual Psychology, who was our teacher the last years of his life, during which time he gave us our first understanding of human behavior. We learned from him essentially:

1. That the individual’s approach to life is a result of early self-training due to his interpretation of his situation. He can change it in later years only if he realizes that his disturbing, conditioned responses are nothing more than inappropriate, inadequate holdovers from childhood. The adult is expected to replace such behavior with more useful responses to be a help and not a burden. He should realize it is useless to try to escape the pain he creates for himself trying to solve adult problems with a child’s tricks and evasions, since problems are only situations for which we have not trained ourselves.

2. That the problems of behavior, which make us feel and act like inferior second-class passengers in life, (p. 16) are no more than the results of our failure to develop the habit of both emotional and physical self-reliance; we retain from childhood the mistaken expectation that others should “hold up our pants” for us emotionally and physically and be interested in as well as responsible for our welfare.

3. That leaning on others emotionally or physically is a child’s way of life. We should not permit this habit to follow us into adult life, since dependency is the root of all feelings of inferiority. Dependency generates the feeling of second-class citizenship. Out of this grows the habit of competition, envy, making comparisons and similar mistaken compensatory striving that we create in our effort to assuage the pain of feeling second class in relation to others. Humiliating feelings of inferiority produce the gnawing, distracting, disruptive, destructive craving for personal recognition and prestige, with its inescapable fear of failure.

4. That unhappiness, loneliness, neurotic symptoms, crime and similar distresses arise directly from this unresolved habit of leaning and depending on others whom we immediately feel we must try to control, rule, dominate or exploit for our own benefit, since we cannot otherwise support ourselves physically and emotionally. (p. 17)

5. That only those who are sell-reliant emotionally and physically can function as adult human beings able to cooperate with other adults, because life demands that we be useful and productive or, as Adler said, to “be a help and not a burden.”

6. That the inadequate responses of envy, greed, competition and sabotage -- with which we try to solve confronting problems of life -- are only reactions which would not arise in the first place if we were in the habit of standing on our own feet and were not always trying to find someone on whom to lean and exploit, demanding that they prop us up and hold us there.

7. That defects of self-reliance and the inescapable pain that accompanies them can he changed only when we fully realize that the pain we suffer is but the other-end-of-the-stick of our leaning, dependent, subaltern habits of mind. Our problems do not have mysterious, hidden sources, and we do not have to look far or deep to find the source; we keep stumbling, tripping and falling over it all day long, even though we refuse to identify it as our own childishness. (p. 18)

8. That all human beings are the product of [social, emotional and physical] evolution, and that we share the inheritance of all human potentialities and are equally based in evolution. Each can evoke his store of potentialities to shape them into his own creation and discover his own reality. Each is his own architect. Whatever one human being has done can be done by others. Creation is a built-in attribute of each of us. It waits, however, for the awakening touch of self-reliance to shape its parts and aspects. (p. 19)

We are so excited to share this amazing workshop which will be facilitated by Pauline Hofstra M.A. Association of Individual Psychology (NWIP), De Wijk, Netherlands, Board member of ICASSI International Summer School.

Pauline’s workshops are absolutely exceptional, Pauline will explore the relationship between Communal Feeling and how we move through life, how we have built, how we maintain and handle our own boundaries and those of others.
This is a fantastic opportunity to connecting with Pauline along with gaining 12 CPD points in a fun educational workshop.

The relationship between communal feelings, how we move through life, how we build and maintain our own boundaries and those of others.

About this event

Facilitator: Pauline Hofstra M.A.

Psychologist, Trainer, Boundary Based Awareness Counsellor in private practice in Amsterdam. Board member of the Dutch Association of Individual Psychology (NWIP), De Wijk, Netherlands, Board member of ICASSI International Summer School.

Pauline teaches this course in the Netherlands – see website https://www.centrumanimare.nl/ and has delivered this course internationally at ICASSI conference (www.icassi.net) in 2018 and 2019.

To explore the relationship between Communal Feeling and how we move through life, how we have built, how we maintain and handle our own boundaries and those of others.

We all come into the world ‘feeling one with everything around us’. As small infants we can only feel we are part of all there is. Like every living thing on earth we want to grow, blossom to the fullest.

As humans we are both ‘a part of’ and ‘a-part from’ the social world. We have our own psychological inner world (based on lifestyle and private logic as formulated by Adler), with psychological boundaries that separate us from the outside world and the inner world of others. This workshop will examine how self-boundary awareness and maintenance of our inner world can enhance self-esteem, autonomy, compassion, mutual respect and social interest in our relationships with others.

In this workshop :

⁃ We will first pay attention to the notion of ‘inter-connectedness’ that is part of the meaning

of Communal Feeling.

⁃ Then focus on what it means to ‘feel connected’ with others. Then explore in on our

daily relationships with others. How do we feel we are connected? What do we experience when

we empathize with others?

⁃ We will build an attention based model called the EETIRO Self Boundary Awareness model developed

by Nick Blaser, a Dutch psychiatrist. This model visualizes our private inner worlds as gardens. We will

use this model to demonstrate what happens when we feel connected to others and how our Life Style affects our inner dynamic and the way we handle our own` boundaries; and those of others. (Lifestyle as in the Adlerian conceptualisation of lifestyle)

⁃ At the end of this workshop participants will gain a better understanding of:

- what happens when we feel connected to each other

- how not only Empathy but also Feeling WITH others help develop Self Awareness and Social

Awareness.

- what, in other words, we need to Feel in order to develop our Communal Feeling as espoused by Alfred Adler and it’s therapeutic benefits for mental well being through the use of boundary visualisations by methods presented that:

1. Describe 3 functions of psychological boundaries in social life.

2. Which Focus on the 3 locations of attention: the intrapersonal space, the intrapersonal space of another person and the extra personal space between (i.e. the interpersonal space).

3. Describe and analyze their own movement between the 3 locations of attention.

4. Explain the relationship between lifestyle and private logic and the concept of psychological inner world and psychological boundaries.

5. Describe and demonstrate the differences between compassion and empathy using the 3 locations of attention.

6. Use the metaphor of ‘the inner garden’ for the inner psychological world and ‘garden fence’ for the psychological boundaries.

7. Use and practice the 3-dimensional boundary projective method using coloured wool felt figures, the wooden sticks and basic wooden figures in dyads.

Revitalizing Alfred Adler: An Echo for Equality
Mary C. McCluskey

Mary C. McCluskey DSW, LCSW is in private practice in New York City and teaches at New York University Silver School of Social Work. She is also a teacher and clinical supervisor in the psychodynamic program at The American Institute of Psychoanalysis.

Abstract

The work of Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology arguably applies to contemporary social work practice and education. The tenets of Individual Psychology are reviewed in the context of a historical sketch of Adler’s work as a medical doctor, psychoanalyst, and colleague of Freud. His eventual divergence from psychoanalysis to begin his own psychological and education movement which focused on social reform is emphasized. Individual Psychology is examined in detail including original case examples demonstrating his influence on and compatibility with contemporary social work theories. Empirical evidence is provided supporting present-day application of his theory. Adler serves as a much-needed example of a profes- sional who successfully and simultaneously advanced both the micro and macro world of mental health. Adler’s contribution deserves to be explicitly included in social work curricula.

De N.W.I.P. is opgericht in 1946 door o.a. Dr. H.P. Ronge, Prof. G.H. van Asperen en Dr. A. Müller.
